A noncooperative approach to bankruptcy problems with an endogenous estate

چکیده

We introduce a new class of bankruptcy problems in which the value of the estate is endogenous and depends on agents’ investment decisions. There are two investment alternatives: investing in a company (risky asset) and depositing money into a savings account (risk-free asset). Bankruptcy is possible only for the risky asset. We define a game between agents each of which aims to maximize his expected payoff by choosing an investment alternative and a companymanagement which aims tomaximize profits by choosing a bankruptcy rule. Our agents are differentiated by their incomes. We consider three most prominent bankruptcy rules in our base model: the proportional rule, the constrained equal awards rule and the constrained equal losses rule. We show that only the proportional rule is a part of any pure strategy subgame perfect Nash equilibrium. This result is robust to changes in income distribution in the economy and can be extended to a larger set of bankruptcy rules and multiple types. However, extension to multiple company framework with competition leads to equilibria where the noncooperative support for the proportional rule disappears.

Non-cooperative solutions for estate division problems

In an estate division problem an estate has to be divided among several players whose total entitlement to the estate exceeds its size. This paper extends the noncooperative approach through a claim game, as initiated by O’Neill (1982), by allowing players to put multiple claims on the same part of the estate, and by considering the case where individual entitlements may exceed the estate. A fu...

Proportionality, Equality, and Duality in Bankruptcy Problems with Nontransferable Utility

This paper analyzes bankruptcy problems with nontransferable utility as a generalization of bankruptcy problems with monetary estate and claims. Following the classical axiomatic theory of bankruptcy, we formulate some appropriate properties for NTU-bankruptcy rules and study their implications. We explore duality of bankruptcy rules and we derive several characterizations of the generalized pr...

Bankruptcy Prediction: Dynamic Geometric Genetic Programming (DGGP) Approach

In this paper, a new Dynamic Geometric Genetic Programming (DGGP) technique is applied to empirical analysis of financial ratios and bankruptcy prediction. Financial ratios are indeed desirable for prediction of corporate bankruptcy and identification of firms’ impending failure for investors, creditors, borrowing firms, and governments. By the time, several methods have been attempted in...

Additive rules in bankruptcy problems and other related problems

In this paper we characterize the set of rules satisfying additivity on the estate along with additivity on the estate and the claims in bankruptcy problems and other related problems. Moreover, new characterizations of the well known rules based on the principles of “equal award”, “equal loss”, and “proportionality” are provided using these additivity properties.

Updating claims in bankruptcy problems

We reexamine the consistency axiom in bankruptcy problems and propose arguments in favor of an alternative definition of a reduced problem. The classical definition updates the size of the estate while keeping agents’ claims unaffected. Instead, we suggest updating agents’ claims along with the estate. The resulting consistency axiom characterizes the well-known Random Arrival rule as the uniqu...
